Ah, the beautiful city of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. Geometry in Brasilia
is much easier
than in other cities, since there are two main shapes to learn: the
rectangle and the square. For three buldings it's necessary for you to
learn the circle and the triangle, but they're special cases so I
wouldn't worry about it too much.
I have a rule about pictures that says if it doesn't move or talk then
there's no reason to get out of the car (or even slow the car down) to
take a picture of it. I have probably missed out on some good
architecture based on that philosophy, but I've also gained time to
interact with people :)
The dome, tower, and bowl - from a distance. The dome is where
congress meets, the tower is one half of congress' offices, and the bowl
belongs to the other (think Senate & House of Representatives - or House
of Commons & House of Lords :-))

The National Cathedral |
The National Cathedral, closer |
The national theatre! |
"Picture me!" (yes, this was a random person who saw me taking
pictures :) |
The national theatre, even closer |
Neither Bethany nor her mother knew what this was, but I think it's
pretty cool to have a large circus-ish tent go up in the middle of the
city :) |
Ok, so I'm one of those strange people who laughs more at my own
mistakes than anyone else's. This was completely unintentional, but as
Mrs. Comley put it "you couldn't have done better if you tried." The
statue that you *can't* see, btw, is part of the JK memorial. Remember
how I said Brasilia was a planned city? Guess who did the planning :) |
Rectangular building. The flowers on the tree are an absolutely
beautiful color. That tree grows all over the place in Brazil, and is
beautiful every time you see it |
The National Cathedral again. Notice the beautiful pattern of the clouds |
Rectangular building. This one qualifies as artsy compared to most of
what I saw |
The view from a top the shopping plaza where the American Women's
Club Meeting (see later on in the trip summary) took place. |
The nice thing about this view is the clouds |
Which are just absolutely beautiful |
No matter how many time you look at them |
Which is kind of funny, since I never noticed them until I looked at
the pictures |
Oh, well - my loss, right? |
And one more, just to be sure :-) |
Linux in Brazil!!!!! |
Brazilian builders haven't learned what American builders did in the
80s - it's not a good idea to have windows in office buildings that can
open |
The JK memorial again, better view |
And again :) just in case there's something wrong with the first one :) |
And another church :) |
And again :-) |
